Activities & achievements
This page summarises what the SATH project has delivered so far and the activities currently under way. For the project's objectives, structure, phases and financing, see the Project overview.
Phase I achievements
The first phase of the project delivered a range of concrete results across the basin:
- a satellite data reception and processing system installed at NBA headquarters in Niamey (working machines, a data storage and processing server, and an image-reception antenna);
- two models developed, calibrated and validated: a climate model for the energy balance of water, and a large-scale hydrological (rainfall–flow) model for forecasting;
- more than 800 stakeholders – NBA and national experts, users and decision-makers – trained in the use of satellite data for water monitoring and disaster-risk prevention;
- 50 computer-equipment kits and 10 new hydrological observation stations with automatic transmission supplied to member states, together with maintenance of hydroclimatic stations;
- production and dissemination of flood and drought alert bulletins and hydroclimatic notes, and a communication platform for sharing information and forecasts with member countries;
- a regional hydroclimatic database, together with this website and an FTP site for distributing climate products and information.
Operation & maintenance (ongoing)
The operation and maintenance phase, under way since 2020, consolidates these achievements and supports the NBA over a five-year period. Its main activities are:
- training dedicated NBA experts to ensure the sustainability of the system;
- support for the implementation of project activities;
- acquisition of equipment and software to sustain the system;
- regular improvement and updating of the models developed.
Regional workshop 2023
From 20–22 November 2023, the NBA – through the SATH project – held a Regional Awareness Workshop for decision-makers and end users of hydroclimatic products and services in Abuja, Nigeria. It brought together representatives from NBA member countries, regional institutions, technical agencies, development partners and user groups to strengthen collaboration on climate services, disaster risk reduction and sustainable water resources management in the Niger Basin.
Regional Awareness Workshop, Abuja, Nigeria, 20–22 November 2023.
Participants exchanged experiences, explored innovative applications of satellite-based hydrological information and discussed strategies for improving climate adaptation and flood risk management. The workshop concluded with recommendations to improve regional cooperation, modernise hydrological and meteorological infrastructure, strengthen climate services and foster sustainable partnerships among stakeholders.
